Today on The Laura Ingraham Show, Senator David Vitter (R-LA) drove home his opposition to the “Gang of Eight’s” vision for immigration reform and specifically responded to Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), who had appeared earlier in the hour.
“I love and respect Marco,” Vitter qualified, before saying, “I think he’s just amazingly naïve on this issue. This is the same formula we’ve seen before… Promises of enforcement never materialize, and the amnesty happens immediately.”
Vitter predicted that the legal status granted by the Gang of Eight proposal would soon become citizenship. “It’s going to happen… citizenship is guaranteed at that point as a practical matter.”
Laura noted that in their interview, Rubio claimed his plan did not offer a pathway to citizenship. But Vitter responded: “As soon as you give [illegal immigrants] legal status, they are here legally forever, and probably they’re citizens not that long after. If Marco thinks… that’s not going happen, I think he’s nuts.”
Vitter stressed that every previous deal that gave amnesty in exchange for tightened enforcement had never decreased illegal immigration. “Every single time, the illegal flow after has been greater than the illegal flow before… We’ve gone to this movie before; it has the same ending every time.“
