Paul maul for the GOP
Posted by Laura
Few predicted the rise of Ron Paul six months ago, but a third and a second place finish so far in the Republican nomination fight should startle our status quo Republicans. Of course there is an element of "protest vote" at play and Democrat voter mischief-making, too. Nevertheless, perhaps conservatives--especially neo-conservatives--should spend less time making fun of Ron Paul and more time trying to explain why the George W. Bush foreign policy and "compassionate conservatism" made America stronger. I am not a libertarian like Paul, but if conservatives don't start answering some of Paul's arguments on the merits, then Paul's support could continue to grow. Paul's followers are not all liberals and independents, so the assumption that he can be buried in the South may be overly optimistic. Paul is a wily old Texan, and his son beat Mitch McConnell's pet candidate in Kentucky. The Pauls might do better in the South than most people expect.
