Live from the Twilight Zone

CNN news has received much attention for its bolstered ratings last week following the disappearance of Flight 370. Yet, what is more newsworthy, given the dearth of facts in the Malaysian case, is that many news organizations have moved into the world of pure speculation and fantasy in trying to raise their ratings. This may work in the short term (CNN’s ratings have nearly doubled in every time slot), but is filming ‘Live from a Flight Simulator in Canada’ really the best use of Anderson Cooper’s time? More importantly, do viewers realize that in the course of nearly 300 hours of broadcasting since the flight disappeared, investigative reporting has revealed virtually no reportable facts? Good journalism and breaking news reports do have their place- but only when there are actual facts to report. Until then, the overblown claims that there is breaking news on the Malaysian flight reveal more about America’s hunger for rumors (and the media’s willingness to supply them) than it does about the state of aviation.
