Former President Bill Clinton was in Louisville yesterday in hopes of boosting Alison Lundergan Grimes' prospects in Kentucky's Senate race. While Clinton was certainly able to turn on the razzle-dazzle to attract standing-room only crowds, Senator Mitch McConnell seems to be in the driver’s seat in the Senate race. Senator McConnell has been no shrinking violet when it comes to confronting Senate liberals, and was steadfast when it came to supporting free speech over elements of the McCain-Feingold bill. On these issues, McConnell has been a strict constitutionalist, and likely possesses sufficient support in Louisville and the rest of Kentucky to maintain his lead over Grimes in a hypothetical match-up later this November. McConnell has delivered year after year for Kentucky’s constituents, and even in a swing state, he remains popular.
