Happy Birthday to my father who is 87 years young today. He served his country proudly in World War II in the U.S. Navy, leaving home at the age of 17 to enlist. From Hawaii to Japan and waters and places in between, he saw and experienced things about which still not comfortable speaking. This is the way the Greatest Generation dealt with life's challenges--they didn't dwell on them, they slogged through them. In the year of my dad's birth, Calvin Coolidge was president, Chrysler Corporation was founded, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby was published, and Scotch Tape was invented. The Great Depression was four years away. A different world. Everyone with parents still alive--I hope whatever problems you have or had as a family, try to come together this Christmas. Love each other. Forgive each other. Help each other. Accept each other--flaws and all. Give this gift to yourself and your family during this season of hope.
