Hut, Hut, Psyche...
Remember those old episodes of Charlie Brown when Lucy would hold the football and convince Charlie to do a kick-off...? That’s exactly what it felt like when Cruz and Lee issued their statement last night that Harry Reid could easily defeat their ObamaCare defund initiative. After weeks of arguing, persuading, and imploring the House to take up the mantle and defund Obamacare in the Continuing Resolution, Cruz and Lee finally convinced the House GOP to accept their strategy. But just as the House Republicans began their fevered sprint towards the plan, Cruz and Lee invoked the classic 'Lucy football maneuver'—whisking the ball away at the last second— leaving Boehner and House Republicans, exactly like Charlie Brown, flailing in the wind and suddenly flat on their backs, feeling duped and infuriated. I think this moment highlights why deliberative thinking and methodical planning is so important to developing a strategy. It shows why we should never just rush in-- after all, 'only fools rush in’. I just hope Republicans can use this time off their feet as an opportunity to pause, reconsider their position, and get their strategy straight.Rep. Duffy: “Thank God [Cruz] wasn’t there fighting at the Alamo”
Today on the show, Congressman Sean Duffy (R-WI) expressed his frustration with the Senate Republicans’ response to the continuing resolution that would fund the government while defunding Obamacare. When asked if a delay were feasible, Duffy argued that it very well might be: “Obamacare isn’t ready for primetime, and the administration knows it […] There could be a point here where we have Democrats in the Senate and House who are willing to join us. Barack Obama might be grateful and say, 'Listen, you guys are twisting my arm, you’re putting me in a tough position, but, ok, we’ll go with the delay’.” Duffy also explained his disappointment with Cruz’s mismanagement of the anti-ObamaCare campaign: as soon as House Republicans came out in support of Cruz and Lee’s long-pushed plan to defund ObamaCare, Cruz and Lee decided to abandon them and completely roll over: [7:52] “Thank God he [Cruz] wasn’t there fighting at the Alamo,” Duffy said.
