Bullying the pulpit
Posted by Staff
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed Arizona Bill SB-1062, ending the chance that Arizona will have a religious-liberty bill for now. While perhaps the bill could have been better crafted to ensure that it was not targeted against anyone in particular, the discussion over the past 48 hours has shown how little the left values free speech. Rather than having an informed discussion that balances the interests of religious individuals, retailers, and the clientele who patronize these stores, liberals were quick to call the religious community, ‘haters’ and ‘Troglodytes’ in an attempt to stop debate before it could even happen. The problem at this point is that many members of our society feel intense pressure to self-censor-- not just in politics, but in the military, business and other spheres of society. We are at risk of forcing many productive members of our society to disengage and retreat from public life. After all, what compelling reason does one have to partake in a society where the penalty of being a citizen of conscience is inevitably to be shamed and demonized? Facebook Fark Furl
