Amnesty Battle: The tea party versus the elites (again)
Posted by Laura

My latest immigration thoughts after talking to three top House staffers and hearing from two in Senate leadership: I am not so sure that "the fix is really in." Remember, GOP elites thought they had the votes for amnesty in 2007, but those votes melted away under pressure. If the Tea Party begins bombarding these people with emails & calls, threatening primary challenges, I'm not sure they can get 60 votes in the Senate.

The Tea Partiers should also start complaining to their favorite conservative media figures that are not doing enough to stop this mess. People should ask them, "Where were you when we fought against the Obama-McCain-Schumer-Rubio amnesty?" Their silence is tacit approval of a bill that is a gift to expanded government and a kick in the gut to the middle class.

Every Republican should be asked, over and over: Why are you helping Barack Obama pass his top legislative priority? Why are you on the side of Chuck Schumer against your own constituents? Why should we vote for you if you are no better than the liberals? Why are we in such a hurry to pass this bill? Have you read the whole thing?

You will notice that up to this point, almost everyone in the GOP caucus has left the door open to back away from immigration reform. If they feel enough pressure from their constituents, they may back down. The Capitol switchboard number is (202) 225-3121.
